OverviewAt the start of the 1919-20 season, goalkeeper Bob Mason was the regular No 1, however when he seemed to go through a period of poor form, he was replaced when Willie was signed from Bedlay Juniors and the newcomer held his place thereafter. One of three brothers who played senior football. He was the son of an Airdrie police sergeant. His first honour as an Accie came on 30th April 1920 when they won the Lanarkshire Cup 2-1 in defeating Albion Rovers. Willie also played in the Final the following season when the Coatbridge side were successful by a similar score.
Chosen to play in a Lanarkshire XI versus a Glasgow XI at Cliftonhill in May 1920, one of only two Accies selected, Paddy Corcoran being the other. Transferred to Heart of Midlothian for a reported fee of £750. While at Tynecastle he was chosen to play for the Scottish League on four occasions, versus the English League in 1924 and 1926 and the Irish League during the same years.
When Jack Harkness was signed by the Tynecastle club in 1928, Willie was surplus to requirements and he moved to Southampton, at that time in the English Second Division. There he made 101 appearances before going to Aldershot in 1932. His brother John also appeared against the English in 1926.
Willie was 23 years of age when he signed for Hamilton, and was 5’10” and 12sts 4lbs.
Debut away to Third Lanark in a 3-1 win on 11th October 1919 in a Scottish League fixture.
