Accies Career
Overview
Accies have produced many fine full backs over the years and Danny certainly came into that category. He was signed in 1958 from Ormiston Primrose and with less than a year’s experience he became a target for the bigger clubs. Heart of Midlothian took him to Edinburgh in a deal which also involved Bobby Walker. Accies were paid £10,000 for the joint transfer.
While at Tynecastle, Danny proved to be a bit of a utility player, even turning out at centre forward and scoring three goals on one occasion. By 1963 he had become their club captain. Three years later he had his leg broken and he was out of action for ten months as a result. On his return to fitness he was unable to produce his previous fine form and he decided to go to South Africa and joined Durban United.
He returned to these shores and played for Morton and Cowdenbeath before hanging up his boots. While at Tynecastle he had the honour of scoring Hearts 5000th League goal. His father played for Third Lanark alongside Jimmy Carabine. On retiring from football Danny worked in the licensed trade for a time.
Born in Prestonpans on 5th February 1939 and he died in his birthplace on 15th April 1977, at the age of thirty eight.
Debut on 21st April 1958 as a trialist in a Scottish League match at home to Berwick Rangers in a 3-1 win.
