JOHNSTONE, George (1945)

Overview

Came into the side in 1945 when goalkeeper Michael Ryan was a late call off. Caldercruix born on 15th December 1914, at the age of 20 he was signed by Benburb from Bothwellhaugh Athletic and was in the Bens Scottish Cup winning side in 1936, the following year he was in Aberdeen’s eleven at Hampden in the other Cup Final versus Celtic.

During war-time he appeared on loan with St Mirren and Celtic as well as his solitary outing with Accies. He won a Scottish League Cup winners medal with the Dons in April 1047. On leaving Pittodrie he was appointed as Player/Coach with Dunfermline Athletic and once again he was back at Hampden in October 1949 in another League Cup Final, this time he was on the losing side as East Fife triumphed in the all-Fife Final by 3-0.

His next move kept him in the Kingdom as he signed for Raith Rovers. Then followed moves to Dumbarton, Morton and Cowdenbeath before he stepped down to the juniors and assisted Thornton Hibs, Newburgh and Nairn Thistle as trainer/coach. A similar position was his with Darlington as well.

Debut on 31st March 1945 in a Summer League Cup match at home to Queen’s Park.
