FINDLAY, Bob (1907)

Overview

Despite being affected by chest trouble, Bob was a first rate player who was capped for Scotland against Wales in 1898 while with Kilmarnock whom he had joined a year earlier. A member of the Kilmarnock side which had won the Second Division title in 1898 and were runners up in the Scottish Cup Final to Rangers. He was a left winger and while at Rugby Park was a prolific scorer with 40 goals from his 92 appearances. A fee of £150 took him to Celtic and his stay there was dogged by a knee problem.

Following spells back at Kilmarnock and with Motherwell he crossed the Clyde in May 1907 to play for Accies. Eleven months later he left for Port Glasgow Athletic and there he remained for 3 years.

In 1914 he emigrated to America and his son represented the USA in the Olympic Games at football in 1924 and 1928. Bob himself had a successful career in Scotland, being capped as well as winning 2 Division Two Championship medals and as a runner up in the Scottish Cup Final of 1898.

Born in Galston on March 29th 1877. He died in America on August 13th 1926, at the age of 49. There he had been employed as a machinist in Bayonne, New Jersey. A younger brother, Tom, also spent some time, 10 years, at senior level before becoming a referee.

Debut on 6th May 1907 at home to Heart of Midlothian in the Scottish First Division.
