McKAY, Willie (1927)

Overview

Willie came from the former mining community of West Benhar, near Shotts and it was with Shotts Battlefield, a junior club in 1925, that he came to prominence and he took the fancy of East Stirlingshire and signed for them on the recommendation of one John McKie, a former Bolton Wanderers player.

At that time he was playing as an inside forward and with Accies looking for stability in that role he was transferred to Douglas Park in 1927. Made quite an impression in his first outing in Accies colours when he scored Accies goal in a 3-1 defeat, not only because of him scoring but with his overall display. In 1928 he one of a number of Hamilton players who appeared as a guest for Solway Star, from Annan, in the Southern Counties Cup tournament. His stay at Hamilton lasted all of two years during which time he proved to be an excellent purchase with his goalscoring and general play.

In early December 1929, Bolton Wanderers made an offer which the Hamilton Directors accepted and he was on his way to a new career in England which lasted 16 years. When he joined Bolton amongst his hobbies was listed the sport of greyhound racing, not surprising knowing his background. His career prospered and he spent five seasons, 109 games and 17 goals, with Bolton before he was approached to go to Manchester United who at that time were battling to avoid relegation from the English Second Division.

Along with three others he made his United debut in March 1934 just prior to the transfer deadline and the new blood meant that they avoided the drop. By this time, he was back at left half. In 1936 he picked up a Second Division winners medal with them.

In war time he turned out for Stockport County and Port Vale, with the war over he joined Stalybridge Celtic.

At the height of his career he stood 5’8” and weighed 11st 7lbs.

Debut on 15th October 1927 in a Scottish League match at home to Motherwell in which he scored.
