McNAMEE, William (1912)

Overview

A strong centre half who served the club well when very few made as many appearances for Accies. He been signed from Strathclyde Juniors in 1912. Also played with Hamilton St Mary’s Juveniles.

Picked by the Scottish League to play against the Irish League in Belfast in 1914. He became the first Accies player to appear in the national side when he played for Scotland in a Victory International in Belfast on 19th April 1919. Sadly it was classed as an unofficial game. At a presentation in the Royal Hotel on 13th August 1919 he received his International badge.

Unable to command a regular place in Accies side in 1920 he was transferred to Airdrieonians as the year was drawing to its close. No Scottish Cup ties were played during the First World War, hence the reason why he only appeared twice in the competition.

His death took place on 10th June 1935 at a relatively young age.
