Accies Career

Overview

A much admired amateur when with the Cowlairs Loco works side, he decided to sign for Lesmahagow Juniors in 1950 and he played at inside right for them. His good form continued in the new grade and Accies signed him in 1951-52 as they fought to gain promotion. This fulfilled, they then tended to go for those with experience and John was never given a chance to show what he was capable of until near the end of the season, and by that time the club were doomed to the lower league, plus the fact that he was played at wing half rather than his favoured inside forward position. In 1956 he had another senior spell when he signed for Dumbarton from Kilsyth Rangers.

Debut in a Festival of Britain Trophy fixture at home to Leith Athletic on 25th July 1951 which Accies won 6-1.
