MORGAN, Hugh (1905)
Overview
Played as a junior with Harthill Thistle and in August 1896 he was signed by Airdrieonians. Within three months fair haired Hugh was on his way to Sunderland where he missed only three matches when they finished runners up in the League in 1897-88.
Late on in the following season he was transferred to Bolton Wanderers for the sum of £200 as they toiled at the foot of the table. In 12 appearances he scored 6 goals but was unable to keep them from relegation. He helped them to come back up the next term as runners up to Sheffield Wednesday.
Then in December 1900 he went to Newton Heath, who were later to become Manchester United, where he made 23 League and Cup appearances, scoring 4 League goals. He was soon on the move to local rivals, Manchester City and sampled relegation yet again as City finished the season at the foot of Division One.
1902 was the start of a two year spell in non League football with Accrington Stanley before Blackpool used him for his final season of English League action.
When he was signed by Accies in 1905, the forms were completed at his home in West Benhar. He was an inside right or centre forward and he scored well, averaging a goal every second match. A bundle of energy.
Debut on 15th September 1906 in a Qualifying Cup tie at home to Albion Rovers in which he scored.
