Overview
Phil junior was born in Dykehead on 23rd February 1907. He signed for Accies in the 1927 close season from Wishaw Juniors. Like his father before him he was not afraid to venture forward when the opportunity presented itself. Within a month of his first game for the club he was picked to play for a Lanarkshire representative eleven at Douglas Park when the opposition consisted of players chosen from Rangers and Celtic. He was one of five Accies players who played as guests for the Annan side, Solway Star in 1928 and as a result the club won the Southern Counties Charity Cup for only the second time. His form was such that he was chosen as reserve centre half for the Scotland side chosen to travel to meet France in Paris in May 1930.
In season 1930-31 he was picked to play against the Irish League. On January 4th 1932 he appeared at Parkhead in the Benefit Match for Patsy Gallacher in which Phil played at left back for a Scottish League Select versus a combined Celtic/Falkirk eleven.
In February 1932 he was transferred to Blackpool and it was while with them that he was chosen to play against Austria in 1934. His time at Bloomfield Road also meant several matches at right back. By December 1937 he had joined Burnley and the following year he signed forms for Queen of the South.
A well built centre half, 5’11” and 12 Sts, he was a marvellous signing for the club.
Debut 10th September 1927 in a Scottish League match away to Airdrieonians.
