From the Whitburn district, near Sunderland, where he was born on April 26th 1889, he was a tall goalkeeper who was signed by Accies in September 1922. He had been with a Sunderland Co-operative side then Whitburn before joining Clapton Orient of the English Southern League where he made 141 League appearances in 8 seasons. During World War One he appeared once for Leeds United.

For Accies he made 17 consecutive League appearances before losing his place to George Sommerville, whom he had earlier replaced. In 1923 he joined Durham City.

Only five years after playing for Hamilton, Jimmy died at Sunderland in September 1927.

Debut on 23rd September 1922 away to Partick Thistle in a 5-3 defeat in the League.
