MORELAND, Russell (1927)

Overview

An experienced wing half when he joined the staff at Douglas Park in 1927. He had served a long apprenticeship with Queen’s Park. A rugged performer. His first impressions on the local press were that although on the slow side, he made good use of the ball and used his experience well.

When Queen’s Park visited Douglas Park for their first match since he had been signed from them he was due to play against them, however he apparently boarded the wrong portion of the train and ended up at Strathaven therefore missing the fixture.

While at Hampden he was chosen to play for the Glasgow Association against Sheffield on September 4th 1925 in Sheffield. Following his year at Douglas Park he joined Third Lanark. While at Cathkin, the club won the Second Division title in 1931 and he was player/manager in season 1931-32. He resigned as manager in December 1934. His next managerial position was with Clyde.

A number of years after his retirement from the game he moved into boxing as a promoter, his first show included Jacky Paterson, Scotland’s world flyweight champion, in 1946.

Not a big player, 5’7” and 10sts 5lbs, but he more than made up for his lack of inches with his will to win.

Debut on 13th August 1927 in a Scottish League match away to St Johnstone.
