Overview
A signing from Denny, his home town. Comfortable on the ball, he proved to be a good constructive right half in his time at Douglas Park from 1921 until 1925.
John was one of a number of guest players who accompanied Third Lanark on their tour to Argentina in 1923. The following year he appeared in Accies Lanarkshire Cup winning side. He was chosen to appear in a trial match for the Scottish League in January 1925.
His time at Hamilton ceased when he was transferred to Burnley on 12th November 1925. From then until 1930 he appeared in 145 League matches, scoring 5 goals. He was placed on the transfer list by the Lancashire club in 1931 and in October that year he turned out for Accies reserve side. John was reputed to be one of the best at the use of the throw in.
A brother in law to George Sommerville. Some reports state that he was the father of Billy Steel who later played for Morton, Derby County, Dundee and Scotland.
John’s vital statistics were 5’7” in height and 10sts 7lbs in weight.
Debut on 9th February 1921 in a Scottish League fixture away to Morton.
