McNEIL, Hugh (1923)

Overview

Yet another who followed his father in wearing Accies colours, he was signed from Larkhall Thistle in September 1923 and made an immediate impression on the Hamilton fans as he settled into the centre half spot.

Like his father before him, he too won a Lanarkshire Cup winners medal when he played in the 1924 Final in which Accies defeated Royal Albert 3-0 at Douglas Park.

He left Douglas Park in 1926 to join Motherwell, his home town team as he was born there and while at Fir Park he often played at right or left half.

In 1928 he qualified as a Bachelor of Science. On 19th February 1930 he sailed from Liverpool and emigrated to Nigeria to take up the post of a technical adviser to an oil company.

At the height of his playing career his height and weight was 5’7” and 11st 4lbs.

Debut on 15th September 1923 away at Kilmarnock in the Scottish League.
