Overview

Born in Edinburgh on 6th April 1963. Played for Firhill School in the capital. Made his debut for Bolton Wanderers on 8th September 1981 away to Oldham Athletic in the Football League Cup when he came on as a substitute for the Yugoslavian International player, Dusan Nikolic. Neil scored to take the tie to extra time at 4-4 but the home side eventually won 5-4.

He then joined Heart of Midlothian on 4th December 1984. He came on as a substitute on 15th December at Tannadice when he replaced George Cowie. Dundee United won 5-2 that day. While with Hearts he appeared in 287 first team matches.

His next move was to Falkirk on 2nd August 1996. His first league match was in a no scoring draw against St Johnstone at Perth on 17th August when he wore the no 5 shirt for the Bairns. Four days earlier he played in the League Cup at Brockville versus Albion Rovers when the Coatbridge club won 3-2.

Neil came to Accies under former Tynecastle team mate, Sandy Clark at the commencement of the new season in 1998 where it was felt that his knowledge and experience would be of benefit to the young Accies players. He left Hamilton in 1999 and joined Cowdenbeath where another former team mate, Craig Levein was Manager. A Scottish Youth Internationalist. On giving up the game he operated a taxi in the streets of Edinburgh.

Debut on 1st August 1998 in a Scottish League Cup tie away to Brechin City which Accies won on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
