HUGHES, Willie (1940)

Overview

Willie was best known as a Celtic utility player. Born in Winchburgh, he was with the curiously named Bellstane Birds before joining the senior ranks with Bathgate in 1927.

When they went defunct in 1929 he moved to Parkhead as an outside left, however he was played in various roles while there and even although he played in almost a century of Scottish League fixtures for them he was not regarded as a regular. In Patsy Gallaghers Benefit Match on January 4th 1932 he netted 8 times, still not sufficient to merit a run of outings. He was loaned to various clubs, Ayr United in 1929, Hibernian in 1932, before he was signed permanently by Clyde on 22nd September 1936. Two years later he was again on loan, this time with Bo’ness. By the end of the year another permanent position at Arbroath came for him.

It was during World War Two that he turned out for Accies, again on loan, before an actual transfer was arranged in January 1941. When Accies Directors decided in March 1945 that a reserve side would set up in preparation for season 1945-46, Willie, who at that time resided in Blantyre, was appointed as coach.

He possessed a very strong shot. 5’10” and weighed 12sts.

Debut on 26th October 1940 in a Southern League match at home to Clyde.
