CAMERON, Hugh (1945)

Overview

A local lad, signed from Burnbank Athletic at the end of the war, an outside left. He was part of the victorious Burnbank side which won the Scottish Junior Cup in 1945 which defeated Cambuslang Rangers 3-1 at Hampden. Because of his fine displays in the competition he was much sought after and Accies were his preferred option. Following a disappointing time he was released during the 1946-47 close season whereupon he was invited to join Clyde and this he did.

In May 1948 he signed up with Torquay United and played for them 120 times from then until he joined Newcastle United in April 1951 for a fee of £4,500. His total there was only 2 first team appearances and in March 1952 he joined Bury for £900 and finally in November the following year he moved to Workington in a transfer deal. By the time he finished playing there he had played 54 games with 4 goals to his name.

He then returned to his homeland where he joined St Mirren in August 1956 and he left Love Street in the 1958 close season on a free transfer. When one of the television companies did a documentary on the late Jock Stein about his life in Burnbank, Hugh was one of those interviewed. Hugh himself was born in Blantyre on 1st February 1927. He was 5’ 8”.
