GOVAN, Jock (1943)

Overview

Jock was an uncompromising right back, typical of his time. Born in Larkhall in 1923, on 16th January, his height and weight, 5’11” and 11sts 12lbs were often put to good, but perfectly fair, use throughout his career which had seen him go from Larkhall Rangers to Larkhall Thistle to Hibernian in 1942.

With only a handful of junior games to his credit he was soon being sought by the top clubs. Along with four other Lanarkshire juniors he travelled to Preston to play a trial for them and as a result the SFA looked into the matter and the players concerned were in the meantime banned from playing in further trials until the case was resolved.

Both Morton and Accies had hoped to play him on trial at that period and Hibernian stepped in and signed him. He had in his brief junior career played for a Lanarkshire Junior Select against a Navy XI at Larkhall.

He came to Hamilton in 1943 on loan. It was decided to offer Hibs £100 for him, this was rejected. Nephew of the four Miller brothers who played for Accies. Jock was a valued member of the great post war Hibernian side which captured the First Division title on three occasions, in 1948, 1951 and 1952. He also appeared in the Cup Final of 1947 as well as being on the losing side in the League Cup Final of 1951. Capped six times by the Scottish selectors in addition to his two with Scottish League.

When he was freed by Hibernian he moved to Ayr United for a short spell. His playing career over he was firstly a greengrocer, then proprietor of licensed premises before finally becoming employed at Ferranti in Edinburgh. He was a noted bowler after retiring from the game.

Jock died on February 19th 1999.

Debut on 13th November 1943 in a Southern League fixture at home to Morton.
