LOWE, John (1935)

Overview

When signed in August 1935 he was paid £10 and his wage was to be £3 per week with another £1 if in the first team. Shortly afterwards he returned to Raploch Park where he played on loan for Royal Albert in a Scottish Qualifying Cup tie.

His debut match for Accies saw him at centre forward where he had played with Royal Albert whom he had joined in 1933 from Motherwell Juniors. On April 1st 1933 he appeared for Lanarkshire Juniors against Renfrewshire Juniors while with the Motherwell club. While with the Raploch Park club he was a prolific scorer and he scored a number of hat tricks for them in season 1933-34. Before the season had drawn to its close he was signed by Clyde, this in March of 1934.

His exploits at Raploch Park assisted the Albert in winning the Lanarkshire League title and he received a Championship Winners medal as a result. He also turned out on the right wing on several occasions, however it was a centre half that he was best remembered at Douglas Park and he gave many sterling performances in that role for the club. He was easily spotted in the thick of things as he was fair-haired.

Given a free by the club he was resigned in 1937. From then until the outbreak of war he missed only 3 League matches for the club. The Lanarkshire Cup Final of 1939 was played at Broomfield where John was in the Accies side which beat Airdrieonians comprehensively by 5-1.

While in the RAF in 1940, Accies allowed him to sign for Blackpool as he was stationed near there. He also turned out for Stockport County around that time. At that time he appeared with a Blackpool Services X1 at centre forward and they won the Lancashire Combination League in 1941 losing only one game. In his 7 outings he scored 14 goals for them.

He was appointed as Secretary/Assistant Manger in December 1951. He then became Assistant Manager/Secretary two years later. When Jacky Cox moved on, John took over as Manager in 1956. Among the players he brought to Hamilton were Jim McLean and Stan Anderson. He resigned in 1958. John had a fruit merchants business in the town. At the time of his death, on 16th August 1995, he was residing in Lochranza on the island of Arran.
