McCABE, James (1927)

Overview

Signed at the age of 19 from Kilbirnie Ladeside where he was regarded as a fine prospect at inside right. So he proved with his excellent play for Accies. Very skilful and had good technique. Said to be the son of a former Accie, possibly his namesake. He was born in Paisley. He was rather unlucky with injury and that put paid to a very promising career at Douglas Park.

Transferred to Partick Thistle during season 1927-28. In 1929 he made 11 appearances for Barrow. He moved to East Stirling and he played for them against Accies in January 1930 at Firs Park. When the Firs Park club clinched the Second Division Championship in 1932 he was the left half in the side who all received gold watches from the Supporters Club. He was a member of the eleven also when they won the Stirlingshire Cup that same season at Brockville in a 4-2 success against Stenhousemuir.

Just prior to the commencement of the new season in 1933 he was transferred to St Mirren.

5’10” in height and weighed 12sts 5lbs, he was the tallest and heaviest on the club’s payroll at that time.

Debut on 22nd January 1927 in a Scottish Cup tie away to Stranraer.
