Overview

A 21 year old centre forward who joined Accies in 1922 from the then junior club, Wishaw YMCA. He ended the season as top scorer for the club in the League.

In September 1923 he was allowed to go on loan to Ayr and while there playing for their reserve side he received his marching orders. A month later he was back in Accies first team. Left Hamilton for Partick Thistle in May 1924. When Helenvale Park was opened on 2nd September 1924 he was in the Partick Thistle side which lost 6-1 to Rangers in front of a crowd of 8,000, among them the Duke of York, who later became King George VI. Hugh scored his team's only goal, the first of the match, that day.

With only a year at Firhill, and less than a dozen outings to his name, Hugh moved to Dundee United in March 1925, appearing in four matches for them before he was signed by Queen of the South.

Without telling his new employers he went to Canada and from there he had hoped to get into America, however permission was not forthcoming and he returned to Scotland in September 1925. He may have returned to the USA later as reports suggest that he played in the American Soccer League with Brooklyn Wanderers. He was just over 5’8” during his playing days.

Debut on 7th October 1922 away to Motherwell in a League match which ended 0-0.
