Accies Career

Overview

The one that got away as far as Accies were concerned. Ian had come on loan from Hibernian along with Tommy Barrett in 1953 as Accies propped up the First Division. He netted both goals on his debut in a 2-2 draw at Brockville. He could play on either wing, but it was on the left that he was most effective. At the end of the loan spell he returned to Easter Road where he was given a free transfer.

Accies didn't pursue an interest in him for some reason but Heart of Midlothian did and he went on to play for them when they won the League title in 1958, as well as the Scottish Cup in 1956 and the League Cup in 1958 and 1959.

On December 6th 1956 he scored in 4-2 win by a Scotland Select versus Falkirk at Brockville in a Trial Match for the Under 23 team. He was capped at that level.

He moved to West Ham United for £10,000 in 1961. He later played with Scunthorpe United and Peterborough United. With “The Posh” for five years where he was converted to full back. Ian later enjoyed a successful career as a Coach in various parts of the world including spells at Arsenal and Everton. Prior to going to Easter Road he had played for St Anthony’s School and Merchiston Thistle. In 1994 he was living in Norway.

Born in Edinburgh on 14th July 1934. His death occurred in Peterborough on 30th November 2007.

Debut on 31st October 1953 away to Falkirk in a Scottish League fixture in which he scored both goals in 2-2 draw.
