JOHNSTONE, Syd (1945)

Overview

Born in Hamilton 21st December 1920. While at school he was a member of the all conquering Woodside eleven which won every competition they took part in season 1933-34. Outside left was his position while at school. He was a junior with Burnbank Athletic when he was signed in 1945.

In the war years he played frequently for his RAF Unit. He was a wing half while attached to the Russell Park side, however he played as a full back while at Hamilton. He later played for Exeter City in over 100 English League fixtures at full back. At the outbreak of hostilities he was employed at Hamilton Gas Works.

Debut on 3rd November 1945 in a Southern League match away to Rangers.
