RANKIN, John (1922)
Overview
A November 1922 signing from Bellshill Athletic, his home town team. He was part of the new left wing signed at that time, Danny Paterson being the other member. He signed on a temporary transfer for Ayr United in August 1923. A month later he was at Mid Annandale.
John played usually at inside forward. Such was his position in the 1924 Lanarkshire Cup Final, though on the right, when Accies annexed the trophy against Royal Albert. He appeared early in the 1924-25 season before being released and he joined Bradford City then moved to Dundee making his debut for them on 17th January 1925 at Falkirk. He played against Accies in the Semi Final of the Scottish Cup that year and was in the Dens Park side which lost 2-1 to Celtic in the final. The following season he made only another two appearances for them.
Transferred to Charlton Athletic on 14th September 1925. There he made 187 League appearances with 34 goals. He then signed for Chelsea, Notts County and finally Burton Town.
Johnnie was Coatbridge born.
Debut on 4th November 1922 at home to Ayr United in a 1-0 League defeat.
