Accies 1 Stirling Albion 0: Saturday 6 May 2000
Report by Donald Anderson
A low key game saw Accies and Stirling play out the end of a controversial season - Accies having been relegated by committee, and Stirling forced to play defender Greame Donald in goal. Accies had slightly the better of the game, though Donald was not given too much trouble. Late in the first half, he had one difficult save to make, a low shot to the corner which he footed away 5-a-side style. With Steven McCormick having actually quite a good game in midfield, spreading the play, and José making a few runs, Accies might have produced a tidy win if David McFarlane had put his boots on the right way.
Three times he was sent through the middle, but the first two attempts ended in horrendous miscues before the third chance was finally blasted low past Donald for the winner 10 minutes from the end. Michael Martin was given a chance at right back, and frankly had a forgettable game, with a whole series of forward passes going absolutely nowhere. The game was somewhat brightened with an absolutely garbage performance by Paul McGrillen, who was substituted in the second half after a series of high and wide crosses into the Firhill terracing. He obliged us at the demo after the game by miming "falling over" when requested to confirm that he was wearing slip-ons.
Contrary to reports in the Sunday "different agenda" Mail, the SFA were not the target of any abuse during the game that I can remember (though they certainly earned it on Friday). Mr. Watson was, however, given a 90 minute lesson that he remains "The Unforgiven" dispite the council managing to get the stadium deal together in spite of him. Bill Sherry appears to have followed the example of his brain over the last three years and has gone on holiday. Finally a word of thanks to the many Stirling supporters who offered their condolences before the game - a few even donated an extra quid to ASA when purchasing their unofficial programmes.
Accies : McFarlane, Martin, Lynn, Hunter (Kelly), Gaughan, Thomson, Quitongo, Bonnar (Crossley), Coubrough (Moore), McFarlane (Moore) and McCormick.
