CAMPBELL, Johnny (1939)

Overview

Johnny was signed from Royal Albert in 1938 by Willie McAndrew. Well regarded at junior level, he was chosen as reserve for a Lanarkshire Junior League XI in April of that year.

A goalkeeper, he appeared many times during the Second World War when leaves permitted and in November 1940 he was chosen to play for the British Army against Scotland in a game at Ibrox which the forces side lost 4-1. A month earlier he also represented the Army in a match against Norway at Shawfield.

In 1947 he was placed on the open-to-transfer list and he went to Queen of the South. He also had spells with Clyde and Arbroath. He was known as “Sodjer”, as he was a rifleman in the forces.
