Accies Career

Overview

A 1996 signing by Iain Munro. David wore the colours of Milngavie Wanderers as a youngster and Partick Thistle liked what they saw and he was on their playing staff in 1989. Within a couple of years a rather disillusioned young man was on his way out of Firhill and heading for East Stirlingshire where his fortunes took a turn for the better and his displays in a central defensive role caught the eye of the Dundee United scouts and he was on his way to Tannadice for a fee reported to be £30,000.

While there it proved difficult to break into the team and he was offered to Accies as part of a proposed deal which would take Peter Duffield to Tayside. The deal fell through and it seemed as if that was the end of it, however Iain Munro was still keen to land him and eventually he was successful and he came to Accies at a time when an injury kept Martin McIntosh on the sidelines. Part of his agreement when signing was that if another club came for him at the end of the season, he would be allowed to go, this transpired when, following relegation for Accies in 1996, he moved to Raith Rovers and back to the Premier League.

After a year there he returned to Accies in September 1997 following the transfer of Martin McIntosh to Stockport County and was with the club until 1998, when he was voted Accies “Player of the Year”. Then he moved to Ayr United on the Bosman over 24 rule, where he was a stalwart for six seasons. While there he played in the Final of the League Cup in 2002 against Rangers in a 4-0 defeat. David collected another “Player of the Year” award at Ayr in season 2003-04.

He moved on to Queen of the South in September 2004 for a time before making a return to Firhill under Dick Campbell. In 2006-07 he was with Dumbarton under Manager Gerry McCabe. From there he joined Montrose before announcing his retirement in December 2008. Three months later it was reported that Keith Knox was contemplating signing him for Stranraer as they were struggling at the foot of the Second Division. Soon after he was assisting Elgin City.
