HENDERSON, George (1906)

Overview

A former Burnbank Athletic player who went to Notts Forest before joining Accies. As a junior he made quite a name for himself and he joined Motherwell, then in 1895 he moved to Airdrieonians where he turned out in 29 League matches for them before going south.

In his time in England he turned out for Preston North End, Swindon Town and Millwall, both in the Southern League, and finally to Nottingham. He made the grade there with 101 appearances and 6 goals and he signed for Accies in March 1906.

A month later he managed to earn a winners medal when Accies defeated Airdrieonians 2-1 in the Lanarkshire Cup Final, George scored the winning goal from the penalty spot. He was a member of the first Hamilton eleven to compete in the Scottish First Division on 15th August 1906 at Shawfield when he played at left half his favoured position.

He was later transferred on loan to Girvan in March 1907 and in March of the following year also. George was born in Burnbank in 1876.

Debut on 24th March 1906 in a Scottish League match at home to Cowdenbeath.
