RIPPON, Willis (1912)
Overview
Willis was born at Beighton, near Sheffield on 15th May 1886. He played junior football, English style, with Hackenthorpe, Rawmarsh Albion, Sandhill Rovers and Kilnhurst Town. By 1907 he had moved on to Bristol City and after spending three years there he was signed by Woolwich Arsenal on 9th July 1910. His outings were few at 9 with 2 goals in League games before on 25th October he joined Brentford of the Southern League where he remained until the season’s end.
It was just before the commencement of season 1912-13 that he was brought to Douglas Park. In his first season he became the first Accies player to score 20 League goals in a season. Picked for the English Players XI to meet the Scottish Player at Ibrox on 22nd April 1913.
Transferred to Grimsby Town on 22nd October 1913. He then moved yet again, in July 1914 to Rotherham.
At the height of his playing days he was said to be 5’9” and 12sts 9lbs. He death took place in 1956 in Rotherham.
Debut on 17th August 1912 in a Scottish League match away to Queen’s Park in which he scored the only goal.
