BRAND, Ralph (1971)
Overview
A product of Carricknowe School, then Slateford Athletic, he was taken to Ibrox where he became a big hero from the time he joined them in 1954 following a spell assisting Broxburn Athletic. A smart penalty box player who was capped eight times for his country.
In August 1965, Manchester City paid £25,000 to take him to Maine Road. His next employers were Sunderland, going there in 1967. Raith Rovers were next to pay his wages. He then decided to hang up his boots and took on the job of Coach to Albion Rovers.
Bobby Shearer persuaded him to join Accies in 1971 after seeing him play in a charity match at Rutherglen. He soon showed that he had lost none of his goalscoring ability when he netted in his first two games for the club. However he soon decided that he had enough of the playing side at the age of thirty five and he retired once and for all.
He then spent a short time at Darlington as their Manager, from December 1972. The following year he took over as boss with Albion Rovers before moving to Dunfermline for a brief spell as Coach.
While at Ibrox he won four League medals, three Scottish Cup medals and four League Cup medals. At Maine Road he received an English Division Two medal. While at school in Edinburgh he was picked to play for Scotland on 4 occasions between 1951 and 1952.
Born in Edinburgh on 18th December 1936.
Debut on 29th September 1971 in a Scottish League fixture at home to Dumbarton which Accies lost 6-2. He scored.
