HAMILTON, Willie (1945)
Overview
Willie first appeared for Accies in 1945 while he was a Preston North End player when he was home in Hamilton on holiday and turned out at right half against Motherwell at Douglas Park in the Ne’erday game. His name was given as “Scott”, a junior trialist supposedly. It was said that he showed promise and had played well. He was born locally on 1st September 1918.
He started off with Clydesdale Amateurs before going to Blantyre Victoria. After only six games as a junior he was signed by Preston in 1937. During the war years he was a special policeman in Preston. At that time there was a W. Hamilton who turned out with several English clubs whether it was he or not isn’t easy to establish. He was a wing half. In 1948 he returned to Scotland and joined Queen of the South. He eventually signed for Accies in 1951, however things didn’t work out and he left Douglas Park.
Debut in a Southern League match on 1st January 1945 at home to Motherwell.
