McLAREN, George (1919)

Overview

Played as a juvenile with Larkhall Avondale. With Larkhall Thistle in 1911. His form while with Royal Albert in 1919 encouraged Accies officials to sign him. He had been with Quarter Huttonbank and Burnbank Athletic prior to joining the Albert. Could play in any of the three inside forward positions.

Shortly after making his Accies debut he was loaned back to Royal Albert for a cup match, when he returned to Douglas Park he was in and out of the team and it was no surprise when he returned to Raploch Park on a permanent basis after spending 1920 with Armadale.

Not long before the outbreak of World War Two, he was present at a Scottish Juvenile Cup match involving Larkhall Gardeners who were minus two players for the fixture and he was coaxed to turn out for them and it was reported that he showed many of his old touches before naturally running out of steam.

He was another who went south to play for Plymouth Argyle, in his case from the Burnbank club when he was 18. The father of Andy McLaren. “Carrie” spent thirteen years in the game and was said to have good positional sense and excellent ball control.

Originally from Quarter he later settled in Larkhall after marrying a local girl. He was employed at Allanton Colliery at Ferniegair. Of a quiet disposition.

Died of a heart seizure in 1964.

Debut on 29th September 1919 in a Lanarkshire Cup Semi Final tie at home to Airdrieonians.
