SMELLIE, Robert (1903)

Overview

Bob was born in Dalziel parish on 15th October 1865. He was with Clydesdale Colts before his first stint with Accies when they were not yet members of the Scottish League. While with the club he was appointed as the first president of the Lanarkshire Junior Association in 1885.

He then went on to play for Queen’s Park in 1887 and it was while there that his play was rewarded with a Scottish cap against Ireland. This was the first of six that he received until 1893. He captained Scotland twice in victories over Wales and England.

He was also in the victorious Queen’s Park sides which played in the Scottish Cup Finals in 1890 and 1893.

Like other amateurs he assisted other clubs as required and so in 1895 we find he was with Motherwell and in 1896 it was St Bernard’s. He returned to Douglas Park to help out on a couple of occasions later. He held the office of President of Queen’s Park in 1910-11. He was a resolute never say die left back, his fleetness of foot was a strong part of his armoury. In 1937 he kindly made a cash donation to the club.

Debut on 13th March 1903 in a Lanarkshire Cup Semi Final tie at home to Lanark.
