Accies Career

Overview

Another of the players brought to Douglas Park from Thorniewood United, whom he had joined in 1957 from Ashfield Juveniles. He made a scoring debut as a trialist at Forfar in a 5-0 rout in early 1959 and also had further appearances before the end of the season adding to his goals tally at the same time.

The new season was an amazing success story as far as Johnny was concerned as he rattled in 27 goals in the league including two hat-tricks. The following year his tally was 22, during which time he had moved into the number 10 jersey as young Johnny King took over at number 9. His scoring form continued into the new season and Clyde decided to make an offer for him which the Accies board accepted and he was on his way.

After less than a year at Shawfield he was back at Hamilton, on loan. By this time he had lost his enthusiasm for the game, and despite adding to his excellent goals tally for the club, his Accies days were over. A real grafter, who could turn a half chance into a goal. He was later involved in scouting for Celtic.

Debut on 24th January 1959 in a Scottish League fixture at Forfar in which he scored in a 5-0 win.
