JEFFREY, George (1945)

Overview

A Wishaw lad, where he played for the Boys Brigade before joining Wishaw Juniors. He was taken south to Tottenham Hotspur before returning to sign for Motherwell prior to the commencement of the fated 1939-40 season.

When season 1940-41 commenced a number of Junior clubs were using senior players to assist them and as a result he returned to Wishaw Juniors who had one or two such players, this practice was outlawed by the football authorities in Scotland and his stay there was short lived. Players from English clubs were not affected and such as Andy McLaren and Obie Burns were able to help Royal Albert.

During the war he was with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and early on he was wounded, however he returned to his unit and in September 1943 he was posted as missing as can be seen from the following he survived the fighting.

Accies signed him in 1945 from Dumbarton. He was an outside right. On 21st December 1946 he was signed by Stirling Albion after being with Dundee United. He made 11 appearances there, at Stirling, and scored on 6 occasions, he left for Montrose in the 1947 close season.

He was a member of the Stranraer eleven which met Rangers in the Scottish Cup at Stair Park in January 1948 when the Stair Park ground held a remarkable 6,500, a record. By that time he had switched to inside forward.

He was 5’7” and weighed 11sts.

Debut on 1st September 1945 in a Southern League match away to St Mirren.
