WRIGHT, John (1902)

Overview

A very talented inside forward in Accies early days before being admitted to the Scottish League. One honour he received was for Lanarkshire against East of Scotland when he scored in a 3-2 loss at Airdrie in January 1892. He played a couple of matches for Motherwell at the close of the 1893-94 season after a fall out with Accies.

Much sought after while at Hamilton, a transfer took him to Clyde during the close season before he was eventually taken south to Bolton Wanderers in 1895. His tally statistically while with them was 85 League outings with 14 goals. Sheffield Wednesday next took a fancy to him in 1898 and he remained in the steel town until 1902 with another 103 outings and 41 additional goals and it was from the Yorkshire side that he returned briefly to Douglas Park before he was again on the move, again to Bolton.

He travelled further south and was taken on by Plymouth Argyle then Southend United and there he remained until he retired. He was employed by Southend Corporation Tramways and Electric Department and continued his link to the game as he took charge of the Southend reserve side. His son later played with Accies.

Debut on 6th September 1902 in a Qualifying Cup tie at home to Wishaw United.
