MURPHY, John (1916)

Overview

With Croy Celtic, then Ashfield Juniors before turning senior with Accies in August 1916. He was a clever inside forward with an eye for a goal.

His attractive play brought him a move to Bury in May 1920. Only days before he had been in the Hamilton side which had been victorious in the Lanarkshire Cup Final at Fir Park versus Albion Rovers. He was on the losing side in the previous year’s Final. John never really settled at Gig Lane and he was put on the transfer list.

Many Accies fans would like to have seen him return to Douglas Park, however he moved to Rotherham and it was while there, in November 1921, that he died of pneumonia while still in his mid twenties. Born in Airdrie in 1896.

Based in Rawyards, Airdrie. 5’7”. 11sts.

Debut on 19th August 1916 in a Scottish League match away to Clyde.
