Accies Career

Overview

A former Scottish Internationalist who joined Accies on a free transfer from Motherwell in 1983. From Swinton, near Baillieston, he had been with Arsenal as a youngster without too much success. A player with Possil YMCA, he then joined Partick Thistle and while there he blossomed into a fine attacking full back, being equally at home on either side of the field. He was first capped while at Firhill.

He was taken back to England by Manchester United and became part of a large Scots colony there. He again turned out for Scotland while playing for The Reds. He next signed for Rangers and after a spell there he moved to Fir Park.

With Accies he was a great asset in the "engine room" of the side. He had an explosive shot and one goal he scored at Shawfield readily springs to mind as he almost burst the net. On being freed by John Lambie, "Sodjer", as he was nicknamed, then went to Queen of the South for a short time and was a member of their promotion winning squad. He later assisted Blantyre Vics.

His list of honours included 10 full caps, plus one Under 23 cap, a Scottish League Cup medal with Partick and while at Old Trafford he picked up a Division Two championship medal and an FA Cup runners up medal.

His playing days over, Alex later managed a local pub, “The Auld Hoose”.

Debut on 5th August 1983 in a Friendly match at home to Celtic which was lost 1-0.
