McCULLOCH, Davie (1939)

Overview

The holder of seven caps for his country, the first of which came in 1937 versus Wales while he was attached to Heart of Midlothian. He later was honoured as a player with Brentford and Derby County. He was born in Hamilton on October 5th 1911 and went to the same school as Bobby Reid.

His 5’10” and 11sts figure was ideal in his centre forward position during a colourful career which included his time with Hamilton Amateurs and Shotts United before the senior ticket was accepted in 1932 with Third Lanark.

The 1934 close season came with a signing offer from Heart of Midlothian and it was taken up. Brentford who were then one of England’s top sides handed over £6,000 to the Hearts board to take him south. In three years his value had gone up to £9,500 when he moved to Derby County.

When war broke out in 1939, he was one of the first guest players brought in by Willie McAndrew much to the delight of the Hamilton supporters, this gave them the opportunity to see Davie, Bobby Reid and Davie Wilson in the same forward line. One match in which he played an important part was the Lanarkshire Cup Final in October 1939 when Accies defeated Airdrieonians 5-1 at Broomfield and Davie got one of the goals.

His list of clubs during that time was lengthy, Falkirk, Brentford, Motherwell, Aldershot, Chelsea, Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic and Swansea Town at least. During that time he was Sergeant Instructor at the Army Physical Training School.

When the war finished he signed for Leicester City in July 1946 when normality returned to the English League games. Non-league Bath City was his next stop in 1947, while two years later he was appointed as player/manager to Waterford in the South of Ireland. He was appointed player/manager with Alloa Athletic in July 1951.

He was a star of the mid-30’s with the outbreak of war robbing him of prime years as happened to so many other fine exponents of the sport. His heading ability was way above average and in no small measure was responsible for his figures of 178 League goals in 234 appearances up to the close of season 1938-39. He also made one appearance in a Scottish League side against the English League in 1935. Died in 1979.

Debut on 21st October in the first Western League match at Celtic Park after the outbreak of war, he scored in a 4-3 win.
