STEWART, James (1914)

Overview

Jamie was one of the fans great heroes through the time of the First World War and even beyond. A player of great talent and experience when he arrived at Douglas Park from Liverpool with whom he had scored 27 times in 68 appearances, in January 1914 along with Archie Kyle, also vastly knowledgeable in football matters. Together they were very much instrumental in bringing on two of Accies rising stars about that time, the first Dan Kelly, a centre forward and young John Hanlon, a speed merchant on the right wing. The latter was Jamie’s right wing partner.

Dumbarton was his first club as he was from that district. A move to Motherwell followed before his travels took him to England and Burnley. At that period in his career he was used as a right winger. He returned to Dumbarton in 1917. He stayed there for only a season before returning to Douglas Park much to the delight of the people of Hamilton.

In the late 1920’s he was trainer at Douglas Park, a qualified masseur, he went into private practice in 1928. The following year his son, Jack, assisted him as trainer to Accies. Heart of Midlothian appointed him as their main trainer in June 1931. With only a year behind him in Edinburgh he then joined Blackpool in a similar capacity and Jack followed soon afterwards from Douglas Park. Jamie later joined Portsmouth.

He was a regular player in the Dumbarton bowling scene and made a name for himself in the sport.
