The Guard Dog

On a beautiful day the owners of the Ponderosa Bed &Breakfast, Mitch and Matthew Cartwright, sat in their big garden when an injured pup came hobbling. Mitch cared at once about the animal which limped.

“Matt, ask if your mother comes with the first aid kit. He is injured”, Mitch said to his husband.

“I’m away already”, said his husband.

Matthew went to get his mother and the first aid kit while Mitch calmed down the husky and put him at ease.

“You stay here until you are better”, Mitch said to the dog who slowly calmed down.

The father-in-law of Mitch, Dan Walker, came by them and was already thrilled with the dog.

“He just came walking into the garden”, said Mitch.

Dan noticed that his son-in-law already had adopted the husky. Matthew came with his mother Laura and the first aid kit.

While Laura took care of the dog Mitch asked, “Matt, shall we keep him as guard dog?”

“That’s good. But how are we going to name him?”, was the counter-question of Matthew.

“He looks kind of tough so what did you think of Chip?”, Mitch suggested.

“Alright. Chip, Welcome to the Ponderosa Bed & Breakfast”, said Matthew.

The dog barked.

Laura suggested, “You go and get some stuff for Chip and then we will look after the patient.”

“At home I had put everything of Cody in a box which is if it’s right still at the attic”, said Mitch.

Cody was the shepherd dog of Mitch who died when Mitch has just become 13.

In the big ranch house Hoss Cartwright asked his father Ben Cartwright, “Pa, what must we actually do with that box with dog stuff?”

“That is of your nephew”, answered the rancher.

Ben was the owner of the Ponderosa ranch where the B&B van Mitch and Matthew also belong to. Then the front door went open and the 2 oldest grandsons van Ben came in.

“Hello grandpa and uncle Hoss. We come to get the box with the stuff of Cody. It’s needed for our guard dog Chip”, said Mitch.

Ben and Hoss looked at each other amazed and questionable.

“Your guard dog Chip?”, Ben finally asked.

“Yes, our guard dog Chip. Earlier this morning an injured husky pup came hobbling into our garden. Ma has treated him and we have adopted him”, answered Matthew.

“Then I will just bring that box to your house”, said Hoss.

He went upstairs.

“When uncle Hoss sees Chip he wants to take him with him right away”, said Mitch.

“Then uncle Hoss must first come pass my parents”, his husband reacted laughing.

Ben found that also very funny. Mitch showed him a photo of Chip and the pup had also stolen the heart of Ben already.

“Matt, are you coming to do shopping?”, Mitch asked after a while and cup of coffee.

Matthew nodded and they went away again.

Hoss brought the box with dog stuff to the B&B of his nephews. He had become very curious about the pup.

Laura had put Chip on a beach towel on a garden bench. The pup felt very at home in the B&B. That Chip was watchful noticed Hoss only far too well. He came with the box into the garden and Chip started barking right away. Dan and Laura ran into the garden and saw a dreadful Hoss and a loud barking husky. They had to laugh very about the situation.

“Silence Chip. This is a good person”, Dan said to the pup.

Chip became silent and Hoss came further.

“Mitchy and Matt came to pick up this box and told pa and me about Chip. I became curious about him, so I brought this box with dog stuff to here”, told Hoss.

He put the box into the garden house and got to know Chip. Laura took care of coffee with cake.

“Hoss, the pup belongs to the B&B so he stays here”, said Dan.

He knew the big uncle of his son-in-law only far too well.

“I know that Dan, I know that”, said Hoss.

Meanwhile he had made friends with Chip and sat next to him. Hoss had a saucer with a slice of cake but the pup ate the cake quickly. Dan saw that but didn’t say anything.

When Chip had eaten the cake Dan asked, “Hoss, how did you like the cake?”

Hoss looked at the empty saucer and asked, “Cake? Which cake?”

Chip had fallen asleep. Hoss understood everything at once.

“That little beast is just as sneaky as that nephew of mine”, Hoss said where after he went home again.

By much love and good caring Chip recovered quickly. He let notice that he was a very good asset for the B&B. Mitch took care of an own playfield for Chip and during the night the pup slept in the office.
