THE WILD HORSE

Since a few days had John Cannon had a few new horses at his ranch the High Chaparral. Everyone had to help to break them which happened too. The younger brother of John, Buck, noticed that 1 horse was notably wild. His housemate and the brother-in-law of John, Manolito Montoya, saw that too but didn’t say anything.

That evening Buck and Manolito and a few of the hands where under foreman Sam Butler sat in the saloon in Tucson.

“Mano, I bet with you that tomorrow I have broken that wild horse”, Buck said after a while.

“You are going to break that wild horse? It isn’t April 1 today, is it?”, Manolito asked laughing.

The others too began to laugh. Buck noticed that he wasn’t being taken seriously and ordered another whisky. Sam walked to him and went to stand next to him.

“Buck, you really don’t mean that you are going to break that monster, do you?”, asked the foreman.

“I do mean that and I will show it you all too”, answered Buck.

Sam knew that when Buck said something like that he really meant it too.

The next morning Manolito said during breakfast, “John, we are going to see something funny soon.”

“How do you mean?”, the rancher asked amazed.

“Your little brother goes to break that wild horse. At least that’s what he said last night in the saloon”, answered his brother-in-law.

John looked at his son Billy Blue.

“Blue, do you something about this?”, asked John.

“No pa. Uncle Buck hasn’t told me anything”, answered Blue.

“Well John, if Buck succeeds in it I think that you must give him a reward”, said Victoria, the Mexican wife of John.

“That’s something. But don’t say nothing about to it to him”, John reacted smiling.

Then Sam came into the ranch house.

“Mr Cannon, I don’t know what happened to Buck but he is now busy for quite a while to break that wild horse”, said the foreman.

At once the breakfast table was empty and everyone was outside.

In the corral Buck was busy for a while with the wild horse. Of course it didn’t go smoothly and he rancher got thrown on the ground time after time again to big hilarity of the hands.

When his family members came to stand by there Buck totally got put under pressure to be able to break the horse.

Suddenly Manolito called, “Buck, make sure that the horse isn’t getting too tired. Then we can try to too.”

Buck, who had thrown on the ground for the umpteenth time, reacted, “You can’t do that to the horse when you are going to try to break him.”

He got up and climbed again on the wild horse that suddenly became quiet and remained that way. Everyone was deadly silent but Buck rode on the horse to the others.

“Well Mano, Are you still talking tough now?”, Buck asked smiling.

The Mexican didn’t know what to say anymore and kept silent.

“Buck, Because you have broken that wild horse you have a week off”, said John.

The whole week Buck was lazing princely while the others had to work themselves into the sweat.
