Musical Talent

Because his eldest son Mitch was not musical at all and his eldest daughter Lisa neither Adam Cartwright had set his hope on the 2 youngest children of him and his wife Sally (7 year old Benji and Rose who was 2 years old).

On an afternoon Sally heard in the bedroom of Benji and Lisa (twins) guitar sound coming. Of course she became curious and went to have a look. At the door Sally saw and heard Benji busy at an old guitar of his father. The young woman knew right away that the young Cartwright had talent.

“Benji, that sounded really good”, Sally said while she came into the room.

The boy stopped, looked at his mother and asked, “Really momma?”

Sally came to sit on the bed next to him and said, “That was really good. I think that you as the only one of the children who had inherited the musical talent of your father.”

“Mitch is a star in baseball and ice hockey, Lisa good in soccer and rose is an upcoming talent to tease boys. So I look for it into music. Is that bad momma?”, asked Benji.

“Not at all son. I think that your father will be deliriously glad that you have musical talent. He was already disappointed when it turned out that Mitch and Lisa not to be musical. Rose is sleeping so I think that you better can practice downstairs. Just come on”, answered Sally.

Benji took the guitar downstairs and went to practice in the front room. Sally began to prepare supper.

During supper Benji asked, “Daddy, may I have guitar lessons?”

Adam looked up amazed and asked the counter-question, “Why do you ask that?”

“This afternoon momma heard me playing on your old guitar. She said that it sounded really good and I really want to learn it good”, the youngest Cartwright son explained.

“If your mother agrees it’s alright by me. But I also want that you keep on playing baseball and ice hockey”, answered Adam.

Benji nodded.

“Let’s hear something later on”, said Mitch.

After supper Benji gave a mini concert whereby the others noticed that he had inhered the musical talent of his father.

Not much later Benji got his 1st guitar lesson. The teacher was Mathilda Wilson.

“Miss Wilson, this is my son Benji Cartwright. He really wants to learn to play the guitar better”, said Adam.

“Hello Mr Cartwright. Welcome Benji. Is Benji short for Benjamin?”, asked Mathilda.

“Everybody calls me Benji because that’s my name. I have been named after my grandpa Ben Cartwright”, answered Benji.

“Let’s hear what you can”, said the teacher.

Benji did that but Mathilda wasn’t impressed.

She said then too, “Benjamin Cartwright, you have absolutely no musical talent at all so you may leave again with your father.”

Adam hinted to grab his stuff and to wait at the car.

When the boy was away Adam said, “Miss Wilson, apparently you don’t know when a musical talent offers himself here. I will make sure that my will develop his musical talent well. Good day!”

He went after his son who was quite upset by the rejection.

“Daddy, I want that you teach me it better. Like you teaches us to play baseball”, said Benji.

“I surely will do that. Are you coming for an ice cream?”, asked Adam.

Of course Benji came along for an ice cream. From experience Adam knew that this form of bribe always had success by his children.

Also by the private lessons of his father Benji learned to play the guitar better and he discovered that he also had a good singing voice. This made the self-confidence of Benji stronger.
