It was an ordinary Tuesday morning. At the police precinct in Cooper street detective Cody Casey was busy with a record when inspector Dan Johnson had to see him in his office.
“Casey, my office! NOW!”, called Dan.
Cody got up and walked straight to his office. He knocked polite and heard saying in.
“There we have Cody Casey, our best detective. May I introduce you to the wife of the mayor, Mrs Laura Lewis? Mrs Lewis, this is Cody Casey”, said Dan.
Cody shook the hand of the mayor’s wife and asked, “Pleased to meet you. What can I do for you?”
“The whole diamond collection of Mrs Lewis has been stolen last night. Our of precaution the mayor wants to keep this quiet until we know more about the thief or thieves. I put you on the case and you will get support from Smith & Jones. They are very precisely but when you have complains about them I want to hear it at once. Would you like to bring Mrs Lewis home and inspect everything? Then I send those two to it too”, said Dan.
Cody agreed and asked, “Mrs Lewis, may I offer you a ride in CJ23?”
“Who or what is CJ23?”, Laura asked smiling.
“CJ23 stands for Cozy Jeep, the name of my car”, Cody explained.
Laura accepted the ride and Cody brought her home nicely.
At the mayor’s house Cody met the seventeen year old daughter Anne.
Both were a bit shy but quite soon Cody asked, “Hello. I am Cody Casey. Who are you?”
“I am Anne Lewis. I assume that you come for the diamond theft”, said Anne.
He nodded and said, “May I make a phone call? I expect 2 helpers and they should have been here all along.”
Anne brought him to a telephone in the office of her father and said, “Pa doesn’t mind if you use his phone.”
She left him alone and went to her mother who was in the living room. Cody phoned to the police station and got Dan on the line.
“I am now at the mayor’s place and wait for my servants. Have those 2 bunnies left or are they living on the moon?”, asked Cody.
“I will send them away at once”, said Dan.
He put the phone down and walked to the desks of Smith and Jones.
“Can you keep yourselves occupied?”, asked Dan.
“Well, some work won’t kill us”, Jones said looking at his nails.
“Well, get up then and go at once to the house of the mayor to investigate everything there under supervision of Cody
Cody”, Dan flew out.
The detectives got up quickly and ran out of the police station.
Anne showed Cody where the diamonds had been.
He asked, “Who know the combination of the safe?”
“Only my parents. Why? The butler does come here often too but I know for sure that he doesn’t know it. Must you question everyone?”, asked the girl.
“I will have to do that because it is part of my job. May I ask you something?”, the young detective asked looking at Anne.
“Ask away”, she said.
“You probably have a boyfriend. Such an attractive girl like you shall have a partner quickly”, said Cody.
“No, I don’t have a boyfriend at all. I never go out because I hardly know anyone”, she answered a bit shy.
“Would you like to go out to dinner with me some time? Or must I ask your parents for permission?”, Cody asked hoping for a positive answer.
Anne said, “I would love to go out to dinner with you some time. My parents will give permission for sure.”
Finally the bunnies came when the search was already dusted and done.
After everything was checked through Cody and the 2 bunnies went down town again to bring report. The bunnies had to follow Cody but tried each time to get pass by. Finally they stopped at a coffee bar. Smith parked their car next to the Jeep.
Cody asked him, “May I have the car keys?”
“Why?”, Smith asked amazed but he gave them
Cody walked into the coffee bar and asked the waitress at the bar, “May I have 2 vanilla donuts, 2 cappuccino donuts and 2 raspberry milkshakes to take out?”
The waitress gave him the order and having paid he left again with the bunnies chasing him. Suddenly the two had gone away. Cody thought, ‘They will get their punishment somehow.’
At the police station he saw that Smith had gotten a booking for driving too fast in the built up area.
He said to him, “You do know that you may not drive 220 km per hour in town? Even though you are a detective.”
Cody walked straight to the office of Dan laughing about the booking of Smith. Dan was on the phone when Cody came in with the lunch. The inspector made clear that Cody had to close the door and sit down.
When Dan had finished his phone call he asked, “Thanks for bringing the lunch. Tell me, what did you find out?”
“The jewels were in the safe. Only the mayor and his wife know the combination but Anne said that the butler hangs around a lot when he wasn't supposed to be there. The bunnies just came when I was ready. Must I question everyone?”, Cody asked eating his lunch.
“Yes. I give you someone along who you must train. He looks more like you”, said Dan.
“No, rather not. I work better alone”, the detective tried to say but Dan didn’t listen to his arguments.
Cody didn’t understand a thing of it and Dan opened a door.
“This is your new partner. Cody, meet Rinty. Rinty, this is your boss Cody”, said his chief.
Rinty walked straight to his new boss.
Cody asked, “Why do I have a dog as a partner?”
“That is on order of the mayor. He finds it irresponsible that you work alone”, Dan explained.
“I think that Rinty works better and quicker than Smith and Jones together”, Cody said stroking Rinty.
“I know that for sure. Why did you actually came in laughing?”, Dan wanted to know.
“Smith got a booking because he thought that he was allowed to drive 220 km in the built-up area because he is a detective”, answered Cody.
Dan found it also amusing.
Then Smith came in and he said to the inspector, “Boss, I have a complaint about Casey. He takes over my work and that of my partner. I demand that you fire him.”
Cody sighed deep and asked then, “I would like to but I have to train Rinty. Have you shown your booking already? You are going to hang it above your bed, aren’t you?”
“Cody, get lost!”, said Dan.
Cody left the office with Rinty.
Dan said to Smith, “Remember well that Cody stands above you and Jones. You do what he says or otherwise you get degraded to the street.”
Smith nodded and went away.
Jones asked him, “What did the boss say?”
“We must do what he says”, Smith said angry.
Meanwhile Cody was busy with the report but it wouldn't succeed. Another detective, Paul Williams, saw that and went to him.
He asked, “Any luck?”
Cody shook of no and said, “I cannot even write a memo without mistakes. Let alone a whole police report.”
“You are word blind, aren't you?”, Paul asked looking through the notes of Cody.
Cody nodded.
“I want to type it for you if you tell it me. Johnson won't have any objections to it”, Paul suggested.
“Alright. Just sit down”, said Cody.
Paul did that and quite soon the report was written on the computer. At a certain moment Dan walked by and saw Paul working with Cody.
He read the report and said, “I don’t mind if Paul writes the report. You should work together with Rinty. Go question the staff.”
They went to the residence of the mayor.
Arrived there the butler answered. Cody showed his badge and they were allowed to come in. Rinty sniffed right away at the butler and that made the butler nervous.
“Can you let the mayor know that the police is here?”, asked Paul.
“Alright”, the butler said and he walked away.
Cody went to sit with Rinty on the stairs.
Then the mayor came into the hall and he said to the detectives, “Gentlemen, come in.”
“This is Rinty and that is my partner Paul Williams. Has anything happened in the meantime?”, Cody asked while he got up.
The answer was negative.
In the living room Paul said while he and Cody got coffee, “We want to question the staff about the diamond theft.”
“You can use my study. My daughter Anne shall bring you to it”, said the mayor.
Anne did that but Cody got asked by her parents to stay for a second.
“Cody, you have our permission to go out to dinner with our daughter on charge of the city”, said mayor Terrence Lewis.
Cody looked at him and said, “I will remember it.”
In the study Paul said to Anne, “I think that you and Cody will become very good friends. On the way to here he only spoke about you.”
“I thought that he was so tough”, Anne said amazed.
“That seems like that but he has never known his parents. He is afraid to get committed. Give him some time”, said Paul.
“Thanks for the advice. There comes Cody”, said Anne.
When Cody came in he noticed that there had been talking about him.
“Williams, have you told her all my bad habits?”, asked Cody quick-witted.
“I wouldn’t dare. Let the first one come”, Paul said laughing.
In the kitchen the butler James said to the kitchen staff, “The police is here to question everyone about the diamond theft. I know for sure that the gal has stolen the jewels.”
“Anne? That sounds strange to me. She is a nice girl”, said the kitchen help Kirk Wilde.
James looked at him and said snappy, “Shut up and go to work Wilde!”
Kirk kept silent but suspected that James was behind the diamond theft.
When they were questioning the maid Anne knocked at the door and she opened it after that.
“Cody, come here for a second”, she said softly.
He came and outside the room Anne said, “The jewels are in the safe. Go and have a look.”
Cody looked very cautious and went to look.
She was right but found it strange though. When Cody came back in the study Paul had just finished with questioning the maid.
He asked his partner, “Why did you had to go away so suddenly?”
“The jewels are in the safe. Paul, I tell you that something strange is going on around here. And now the butler has suddenly disappeared too”, Cody said walking around.
Paul nodded.
“Casey and Williams, where is my daughter?”, the mayor asked who came storming into his study.
“Anne is gone and the butler too? Rinty, find Anne”, said Paul.
“Wait. Rinty noticed already that the butler was suspicious. Then Anne comes to say that the jewels are back in the safe again. I go and have a look and a moment later both the butler and Anne have disappeared. Conclusion: James the butler has Anne because she knows too much about it”, Cody reasoned.
They decided to look for the butler. Cody and Paul got pushed aside by James and he got away by driving away in the car of the mayor. The detectives ran to their car but Paul got hit by a lost bullet. Cody set in the chase and didn’t spare anything with it. He drove across the pavement, then across the street and meanwhile he contacted the precinct.
He said, “Here car GJ23. I am now after the butler who drives in the car of the mayor. Please assistance. Over.”
“It’s on its way, car GJ23. Over”, reacted Dan.
In the meantime Cody was driving James quite narrowly. Suddenly James drove into a dead end street. The detective saw his chance and threw a paint bomb on the car which exploded on the front window shield.
Cody parked his car across, drew his revolver and called, “It is over James. Come out of the car with your hands up. You are under arrest!”
Carefully he came out of the car with drawn revolver. But suddenly James had disappeared. When Cody came to look at him it turned out that Anne was being held hostage by the butler. She had knocked him out half with the car door.
“Have you done that? What will your father say? To hit the butler knock out. A daughter of the mayor doesn’t do that, does she?”, Cody asked Anne teasing.
“Cody, look out”, she called then.
The detective looked around him but didn’t see his dog anywhere.
“Anne, warn the police and look for Rinty. I will deal with the butler”, said Cody.
“Alright”, said the girl.
Suddenly Cody got surprised by the butler who had woken up in the meantime and took him along to a door. Meanwhile Anne warned the police and said where they were. Cody and James came out in a deserted factory.
“Now you are really going to die Casey”, James said who had a pistol too but couldn’t shoot with it.
Cody saw a lead piper lying, grabbed it and hit the weapon out of the hands of James. Hereby he fell down on the ground as well. James beat him up until he fell on the ground by a bullet coming from the revolver of Dan Johnson. He and Anne went quickly to Cody.
Anne asked worried, “Are you alright Cody?”
“I am fine”, he knew to bring out before he passed out.
At the hospital Cody came round and he saw Anne and Dan by his bed.
“What has happened? Where am I?”, he asked confused.
“James, the butler, has beaten you up and you are at the hospital. Your left ankle is broken but the doctor says that you will be alright. Rinty is at the precinct. Unfortunately Paul has been killed by the butler”, told Dan.
“Pa is not very pleased that you have changed his car with that paint bomb. But he is willing to forgive you”, Anne said laughing.
“I try to say that all the time but what that concerns Cody hardly or don’t listen to what I say”, answered Dan.
Though he was also glad that Cody had solved the case and not the 2 bunnies.
As thanks for solving the diamond theft Cody got the privilege not only to go out with the daughter of the mayor but it was also forbidden to give the young detective a ticket for anything what so ever.
