The whole night Joe Cartwright couldn’t sleep. The strange thing was that this time it wasn’t the blame of one of more girls. He knew that very sure. Suddenly there was a knock at the front door of the ranch house. Joe decided not to react at it but this plan didn’t last long. Ben Cartwright, the father of Joe, and the older brother of Joe, Hoss came downstairs where after Joe went downstairs too. Hoss fell asleep on the stairs so he was no use to the others. The knocking kept on going so Ben wanted to answer it when his youngest son went to protest.
“Pa, do not open because the one who stands in front of the door is insane”, said Joe.
“How do you know that so well?”, Ben asked worried.
With reluctance Joe decided to confess.
He sighed deep and said, “I had a date with a girl named
Gloria Baker. It was all arranged by a vague acquaintance. We had a nice evening but I knew that it wouldn’t work out between us so I dumped her. I did that a very courteous though.”
“But apparently she seems to like you or otherwise she wouldn’t be working up our front door”, said Ben.
Then the knocking stopped. Though Ben and Joe decided to go and look but when they came outside to look there was nothing to see. Not even tracks were to be seen at the yard.
“Joseph, I find it a strange story but you now that anything can happen around Halloween. We just go back to bed and pretend like nothing has happened”, said the rancher.
“Alright pa”, said Joe.
The Cartwrights went back to bed and even Joe slept through till the next morning. But now he was aware when he had a date around.
