THE SINGING SHERIFF

Huckleberry Hound was once again travelling. On his horse named Horse he arrived in the small village Moodyville.

“Hm, this seems a jolly town to me”, said Huck.

He decided to stay here as long as he wanted. Or needed.

That evening Huck went to the Cozy Saloon. Everywhere cowboys sat gambling away their hard earned money on booze and/or poker. Huck went to sit at a table in the corner and looked around.

“Hm, there are probably now music lovers here. Let me do the singing then”, Huck said cheerful.

A moment later sounded throughout the saloon, “Oh my darling, oh my darling. Oh my darling Clementine. You are lost and gone forever”.

But Huck didn’t come any further with his favorite song because during his performance all visitors ran out of the building. Bartender Hank came with a rolling pin to Hick and threatened to hit him with it.

“Chasing my customers away with your cat yelp. I never want to see you again in my saloon!”, the bartender said angry.

Huck flew out of the saloon and looked for his temporary room with Horse.

“Nobody appreciates a good singer when they hear one”, said Huck.

And he began to sing again.

The next day there was a village meeting in the saloon. The subject was: Crime control!

“It is really getting out of hand with the crime at the bank. Each morning I can put down a new safe”, bank manager Glen Parker complained.

“And then to think that you have the very newest safety security material”, said Hank.

“They keep breaking that time after time. We need to take harder measures. But how and what?”, asked Glen.

Everybody thought deep but couldn’t think of anything. Suddenly Hank remembered the incident of the previous night.

“Boys, I think that I have a solution. Last night there was a cowboy in my saloon who began to sing so out of tone that the whole saloon was empty in 1 second. I chased him away. Maybe if we can find him and convince him that we need him to solve the crimes he might come here”, said Hank.

“We make him sheriff and then he can chase away the bandits with his singing en”, said mayor Frank Wilson.

“Let’s go and get him”, said Hank.

The men got up and went to the hotel room of Huck which was empty.

“Go look for him and bring him back”, was the order of the mayor.

Glen and Hank went on their way.

Just two days later they found Huck.

“Mr Huckleberry, we need your help”, said Glen.

“Why?”, Huck asked amazed.

“Well, my bank gets robbed each time with the safe and all. Hank told us that you sing so beautiful and it seems a good idea to us that you become sheriff to chase the bandits away that way”, said Glen.

“Then you better can hire my good friend Quick Draw McGraw. I cannot shoot very well you see”, said Huck.

“We don’t want that Quick Draw McGraw but you. The only thin g you have to do is start singing as soon as those bandits come in”, said Hank.

“Besides you will get a big reward too”, Glen said hoping that Huck would give in now.

“Let me think for a moment”, said Huck.

He though deep and then he said, “I do it.”

They went back to Moodyville.

The next day an announcement was hanging in the village:

FROM TODAY, APRIL 13, ON THE BANK HAS A BRAND NEW SAFETY SECURITY. THE BNAK ROBBER WHO SUCCEEDS TO CRACK THE BANK SAFE GETS A MILLION DOLLAR.

MAYOR AND CITIZENS OF MOODYVILLE

As if Moodyville was situated at the coast, so the village got run over by all the bank robbers of the country. They pushed each other away to get inside but finally everyone came in. Then the door fell into its lock so that the bandits were locked up. Like a vulture on a fresh corps in the desert the bank robbers got to the newest bank safe.

Without that they knew or had noticed suddenly from behind a door sounded, “Oh my darling, oh my darling. Oh my darling Clementine. You are lost and gone forever.”

The bank robbers broke down the walls to get away as soon as possible from the terrible cat yelping. Not only Moodyville was released from all the bank robbers, the bank too needed a new building.

Huck was the hero of the day and that day (April 13) was then a special day too.

“Huck, from now on April 13 is Huck day. But that’s not the only thing because you also get this medal plus an amount of money of 12.000 dollars. Besides this you are also honor citizen of this town which changes its name into Happyville”, said the mayor.

“Gees what an honor”, Huck said a bit shy.

He got the medal pinned on and of course Huck had to say a few words.

He went to stand in front of the microphone and sang, “Oh my darling, oh my darling. Oh my darling Clementine. You are lost and gone forever.”

And yes, again Huck got chased out of the village whereby he would never come here again.

“Gratefulness isn’t everything”, Huck said while he rode away.
