It was a jolly day for the stallion Jolly Jumper. He became a year older.
“Happy birthday to me. Happy birthday to me. Happy birthday to me the glory. In the glory. In the glory”, Jolly Jumper sang for himself.
He saw his faithful companion Lucky Luke coming and hoped that the poor lonesome cowboy would congratulate him. But to his stupid amazing that didn’t happen.
“Come Jolly. We are going again”, said Lucky Luke.
He mounted on and together they left their sleeping place.
Suddenly they got visited by a telegram deliverer.
“Telegram for Lucky Luke. Telegram for Lucky Luke”, called the telegram deliverer.
“I am Lucky Luke”, said Lucky Luke.
“And I am Jolly Jumper”, said the stallion.
His mood already had reached the lowest point and now that became even worse. Lucky Luke read the telegram and gave the telegram deliverer a 5 cent piece as a tip.
“Thank you”, said the telegram deliverer and disappeared again.
“Jolly, we go back to Notts City again. The bank has been robbed”, said Lucky Luke.
“Not by the Daltons, is it? That would really spoil this day completely”, said Jolly Jumper.
Lucky Luke turned his horse and went back to Notts City. Jolly Jumper thought furiously, ‘Why don’t I have on this special day in the year off?’
Meanwhile the bank robbers Tim and Jim Walker were drinking away their loot in the saloon.
“We go to the next town to rob a bank”, Tim said jabbering.
They got up and walked staggering out of the saloon. Exactly at that moment Lucky Luke and Jolly Jumper were coming.
“Those are the ones we must have. Go Jolly”, called Lucky Luke.
“Well, here we go again”, Jolly Jumper said to himself.
They went after the bank robbers. Jolly Jumper grabbed the lasso and threw it around the brothers.
“Let us go”, said Jim.
“We haven’t done anything”, reacted Tim.
“You have done so. The bank is robbed by you”, said Lucky Luke.
“And thanks to me you are caught”, Jolly Jumper said proud as a peacock.
“You go to jail to sit out the rest of your punishment”, said Lucky Luke.
After they had delivered the brothers at the prison they went on their way again.
“Jolly, now we must go to Rocktown”, said Lucky Luke.
“No way cowboy. I’m so tired already”, protested Jolly Jumper.
“Jolly, it’s really worth the trouble going there”, said Lucky Luke.
“If you really want to go to that little town we go but I am not walking”, Jolly Jumper said determined.
Lucky Luke suspected the worst and he was indeed the sucker.
After walking a few hours Lucky Luke and Jolly Jumper arrived in Rocktown.
“And now act normal Jolly. In this restaurant a big surprise is waiting for you”, said Lucky Luke.
“For this time only”, the stallion sighed.
Lucky Luke put a blindfold on his stallion and together they went inside. Jolly got put on a chair.
“Now take the blindfold off Jolly”, said Lucky Luke.
The stallion did that and what did he standing in front of him? A very big birthday cake.
“Happy birthday Jolly”, said Lucky Luke.
Rantanplan was present too.
Jolly Jumper wiped a tear from his eye and said touched, “Cowboy, thank you for this beautiful surprise. It’s just a pity that that walking flea shop is there too.”
Just the next evening Lucky Luke could sing again, “I am a poor lonesome cowboy.”
