BIRTH AT THE PRAIRIE

Through the rough land a wagon and horse travelled with in there a widow. The widow, Sara Hartman, was about to have her first child. The trip felt the pregnant woman very heavy. The husband of Sara, Lars Hartman, was murdered by an outlaw who had left her alone. By the death of Lars Sara decided to go to another town. She was already two weeks underway and still was the town where she had to be not in sight. Sara wanted to start a new life in Silver Gulch.

Sara praised each day she was still pregnant. Though she kept in mind that the baby could come any moment. One day she met a cowboy. The cowboy rode towards her.

He asked her, “Madam, can I help you?”

“I am on my way to Silver Gulch. Can you guide e me to there? An outlaw has killed my husband. I am Sara Hartman”, the widow replied.

“I am Lance Miller. I will help you”, Lance said.

Together they rode ahead until the evening fell. They stopped near a wood where they made camp. While Lance took care of the horses Sara cooked the warm food.

During the meal Lance asked, “When is the baby due?”

“It is due any moment. Don’t you worry because I know exactly what I must do”, the extremely pregnant widow answered.

Lance said, “Tomorrow we are at my ranch. There you can stay as long as you like.”

Sara was charmed by him.

After supper Sara went to sleep. But the sleep wouldn’t come. After a few hours Lance came to lie with her.

He asked, “How are you feeling?”

“Tired. I believe that the baby is coming”, Sara said.

She wasn’t far from the truth.

The next morning Sara woke up with heavy pain.

“Lance, it is time”, she said after the contraction.

The cowboy walked to her and asked concerned, “Is there anything I can do for you?”

“No, I must do it myself. Let’s get to your ranch quickly”, the mother to be said.

Quickly the things got packed and Lance put his horse also before the wagon and helped then the woman in it. He drove the horses himself.

Not much later the twosome arrived at the ranch of Lance.

“We are here. It doesn’t look much but the land around it is very fruitful”, the cowboy said.

“I am sure that the baby and I will stay here for a long time”, Sara said slowly.

Lance jumped from the box and helped her on the ground. Sara walked to the front door and got another contraction. Lance brought her inside. Sara held herself tight to the settee when the next contraction announced itself.

“You go to bed while I get the Doc”, Lance said.

He brought her to his bed and went to get the heal master.

Sara got undressed and looked at her enormous belly. By the heavy riding the delivery got well on the way and it didn’t take long before Sara got push contractions.

Lance rode like hell to the doctor who just came walking by.

“Doc, you must come along because I have a woman with me at home and she is in labor”, the cowboy said.

The heal master went to get his bag and went then after Lance.

At the moment that Lance and Doc came Sara felt the baby coming.

“The baby comes”, the mother to be said gasping.

“I will examine you for a moment”, Doc said calm.

He did that and after the examination he said, “With the next push contraction you must help along.”

That happened and Sara screamed it out of pain. Lance was a big support for her and this gave Sara strength to push.

After an hour or two Doc said, “There is the head coming out. Just keep on going.”

Sara started to push as hard as she could and suddenly they heard crying.

“It is a boy”, the heal master said.

Lance looked at her and said, “I knew you could do it.”

Sara got her son and said, “I name him Lars after his father.”

Lance let Sara recover in all peace from the heavy trip and the delivery. The two grownups got on so well that Sara decided to stay with her son. Yet half a year after the birth of Lars Sara remarried with Lance.
