Adam Cartwright knew that his seven year old son Mitch had a lot of difficulty with reading. To get the boy to read anyway he took him to Virginia City on an afternoon.
At a bookstore they went inside.
“Daddy, are you going to buy books for yourself again? You do have more than enough, don’t you?”, asked Mitch.
“Kid, we are here not for me but for you”, answered Adam.
Mitch looked at his father questionable.
“Recently you have gotten a CD-player of grandpa, haven’t you?”, asked Adam.
The boy nodded but didn’t understand much of it yet.
“Well, with your CD-player you can listen to audio books. And when you hear the story and you read it in the book version then your reading will probably improve. That’s why we are here”, Adam explained.
They walked to the children’s books. Adam had printed the list with audio books and looked for the reading books with his son.
“Do you help me with reading?”, asked Mitch.
“Of course I help you. And the others too”, answered Adam.
Mitch was at ease.
Home again Mitch got his CD-player and an audio book + the reading book. Quite soon the young Cartwrights was listening and reading at the same time. That way he was no trouble at all for him. That was good for Adam because he had quite a chores to do at the yard.
In the evening Mitch asked, “Daddy, now that I have gotten those reading books of you I have to put them somewhere. Would you like to make a bookcase for me?”
“Of course I will make that. And I will do that too”, answered Adam.
“Which reading books?”, asked Ben.
“Which I got of daddy this afternoon. Now I can hear the story with my CD-player and read along”, answered his grandson.
“How is the reading going?”, asked Hoss, the eldest uncle of Mitch.
“Difficult, but now I can hear it a bit better”, was the answer.
“We also will help you”, said Ben.
Mitch knew that too.
After supper Mitch let his son read out loud a piece. Hereby the men noticed that Mitch already could read better than before. Adam now knew for sure that his son would learn much better to read.
