It was a very ordinary day when the outlaws Hannibal Heyes and Kid Curry rode into the town Endsrock. Both outlaws noticed that there was no sheriff. On the door of the sheriff hang a sign ‘Closed’.
“Heyes, is it just me or is there no sheriff here?”, asked the Kid.
“It’s not just you because there is no sheriff. Perhaps he is on vacation but then there must be a deputy. But I also see none anywhere”, answered Heyes.
They looked around but a deputy was also not to be seen anywhere. The outlaws rode to the saloon and dismounted.
“Maybe they know more the saloon”, said Heyes.
The barkeeper saw the 2 cowboys coming and knew enough.
“Gentlemen, what may it be?”, asked the barkeeper.
“Two whisky”, said Heyes.
They got that and it tasted the outlaws excellent.
“Are you happen to be the new sheriff?”, the barkeeper asked Curry.
The outlaws looked at each other amazed.
“Me the new sheriff? Why?”, asked Curry.
“Well, there would come a new sheriff and a deputy too. Is that by coincidence the deputy?”, the barkeeper asked pointing at Heyes.
“Eh yeah, we are the new acting persons of the law in this village. I am Joshua Smith and that is Thaddeus Jones”, said Heyes laughing sheepish.
“This is no village but a town. And where are your badges then?”, a man named Frank Miller asked.
He was the bank manager.
“In our office. First we wanted to get a drink before we get to work”, answered Heyes.
Quickly they emptied their glass and went to their office.
After the door had been made open the outlaws could start with their new job.
“Heyes, who would ever thought that we would be sheriff and deputy?”, Curry asked sitting behind his desk.
“This is a dream. We, 2 wanted outlaws, must now control the law in this hamlet”, answered Heyes.
The outlaws decided to try to make the best of it and hoped that nobody would recognize them.
That afternoon an unknown cowboy rode into town. The outlaws sat outside enjoying the sunshine and peace and quiet. Curry happened to be looking at the visitor and recognized him.
“That is Ugly Jake Collins, isn’t he?”, he asked whispering.
Heyes looked and recognized the man too.
“Indeed”, Heyes said worried.
They knew that ugly Jake Collins was very dangerous and hoped that he wouldn’t recognize them.
Jake stopped at the saloon and dismounted. After he had hitched his horse the outlaws went into the saloon.
“A three double whiskey and quickly please”, he roared.
The barkeeper gave him that and left him alone.
After a while Jake left the saloon. He looked around and walked then fast to the hotel. At the door Jake saw Heyes sitting.
“Well, that’s just a cowboy so he can’t do anything to me”, Jake said to himself.
He went inside the hotel and took a room. There Jake thought about how he could best empty the full safe.
Sometime later Heyes was with his round and came at the bank as well.
“Mr Smith, nice that you drop by. I wanted to show you my newest safe”, said Frank.
They walked to the safe which Heyes recognized. He had cracked it often himself.
“Is that your newest safe?”, he asked.
“Yes. This is the Gladiator 3000. It’s not to be cracked”, said Frank.
“From whom have you heard that?”, Heyes wanted to know.
“From the man who has sold it to me. That was Mr Collins”, was the answer.
Frank showed the contract. Heyes read it but didn’t trust it.
“I take this contract to the sheriff”, said the outlaw.
He folded it up and put it into his inside pocket. Frank was controlling himself but inside he boiled of anger. When Heyes was away Frank rushed to the hotel where Jake waited for him.
“Jake, we have a big problem. The deputy came to the bank and I showed him the safe. One way or another he knows that safe”, Frank said nervous.
“That’s impossible. Nobody can crack that safe or has ever done that”, said Jake.
“When you saw how that deputy looked at that safe you wouldn’t say that”, reacted Frank.
“He is just trying to scare you. That’s all”, said Jake.
Frank now was convinced of that and went back to the bank.
In the time while Heyes was doing his round Curry looked through the pile of wanted posters. To his amusement he came across those of himself and Heyes. But he also saw the ones of Jake Collins and Frank Miller .
He kept them apart to show them to Heyes.
After his round Heyes came inside again.
“Kid, what is the matter?”, the outlaw asked amazed.
“That Jake Collins is a wanted one, just like we are. But also a certain Frank Miller falls into that category”, Curry said while he gave the posters to Heyes.
Heyes looked at the posters and said amazed, “That Frank Miller is the bank manager. He has the Gladiator 3000 standing inside his building. Besides Miller claims that his safe is not be cracked and that is brand new. I have cracked that safe so many times. He was nervous when I asked about that safe.”
He looked at his partner smiling and continued then, “I know how we can arrest those 2 at the same time. Tonight I empty the safe and put those posters instead there. You make sure that Jake is at the bank at 9 o’clock. I do that with miller. The reason is that Jake has tried to empty the safe last night. As soon as they open the safe we can arrest them.”
“Brilliant idea Heyes”, said Curry.
Then he showed their wanted posters.
“That are Hannibal Heyes and What’s his name”, Heyes said frowning.
That night everything was silent and dark At the bank. Unnoticed Heyes went inside the bank building. One look at the safe was enough for the outlaw to be able to open it. So that happened and Heyes did a notable discovery. The safe was completely empty. The outlaw didn’t rethink for a moment and put the wanted posters of Jake and Frank into the safe. He closed the safe again and made sure that he got away.
Curry laid in a cell sleeping when Heyes woke him up.
“Wake up Kid. You have to get to work because all the money is out of the safe. Besides I saw someone coming out of the building outside working hours. I dare to bet that Miller and Collins know more about it”, said Heyes.
The sheriff first looked at him sleepy but was then wide awake at once.
“From whom has Miller that safe?”, asked Curry.
“Miller claims that he bought it from Jake Collins. Here is the contract of sale”, answered Heyes.
He gave the contract of sale to his friend. Curry read. Both outlaws realized that they had to deal with 2 other wanted outlaws.
“You arrest Miller from his bed and I get Collins”, said Heyes.
So said, so done.
Curry knocked at the house of Frank who was very amazed to see the sheriff.
“Sheriff, what are you doing here? And at this time yet”, said the bank manager.
“I’m sorry but there problems at your bank”, answered the outlaw.
Frank quickly got dressed and went with Curry to the bank where in the meantime Heyes and Jake also were.
“Jake, what are you doing here?”, Frank asked amazed.
“I had to come along of the deputy. What are you doing here?”, Jake wanted to know.
“Mr Miller, it appears that your safe is empty. The deputy saw someone getting out of the bank building earlier in the nightly hours”, Curry said ignoring the question of Jake.
“That wasn’t me because I was at home from 22.00 hours till now”, said Frank.
For a moment he stopped with talking and asked then, “What is there in that safe then?”
“We just going to take a look because only then we know the answer”, was the answer of Heyes.
Frank opened the safe and found only the wanted posters which Heyes had left behind earlier on. He grabbed the posters and looked at them.
“How did you get this?”, Frank asked amazed.
“We have these posters because we are the sheriff and deputy”, answered Curry.
Jake and Frank looked at each other for a second and tried to get away. But the sheriff drew his revolver and held them under gunshot.
“Come because you are under arrest!”, said Curry.
Because Heyes was also holding them under gunshot Jake and Frank went along. By the commotion everyone had woken up including Terry Walker.
“Have they robbed the bank?”, Terry asked when the 2 outlaws were behind bars.
“Indeed”, said Heyes.
“I am Terry Walker and the new marshal of Endsrock. Here is the reward for catching those 2”, said Terry.
He gave them each 1000 dollar where after Heyes and Curry took off their badges. Here after they left again.
“Marshal, those 2 are happen to be Hannibal Heyes and Kid Curry. There are rewards on their heads too”, said Frank.
Terry went to stand in front of his cell and asked, “You don’t really think that Hannibal Heyes and Kid Curry will behave themselves as deputy and sheriff. Do you?”
Frank thought it was better to keep silent and went to lie on his bed.
