The brothers Adam and Little Joe Cartwright sat quietly enjoying of the all peace and quiet and their fresh coffee.
“What a quietness now pa and Hoss are away”, Adam sighted.
“Say that again. But it will be very temporary again”, answered Little Joe.
They took another cookie and a sip of coffee. Suddenly they heard a sound which they have never heard before. Both brothers put their coffee down and ran outside. What and who came there riding? Hoss Cartwright, the middle son of Ponderosa owner Ben Cartwright, came riding on a bike upon the yard. His horse Chub came jogging after him. Adam and Little Joe didn’t know what they saw. Hoss stopped near them and dismounted.
“Hello Adam, Joe. What do you think of my bike?”, asked Hoss.
“Is that a bike?”, Little Joe asked a bit mocking.
“Yes, this is a bike. And before you are going to ask what there can be done with I will tell you right away: ride it!”, answered Hoss.
“Take a ride”, Adam remarked dry.
Little Joe started to laugh hard. But Adam couldn’t control his laughter anymore. Hoss became furiously, mounted on again and rode away hard. But not for long.
Suddenly he started to ride lower and lower. then Hoss stopped to see what the matter was. He saw the flat tires and knew enough.
“Dadburnit”, Hoss cursed out loud.
There was nothing else for him to do than to go home by walking. He dumped the bike in the forest and walked home.
Arrived at home Adam and Little Joe saw their brother coming.
“Where is your bike?”, asked Adam.
Hoss said, “Gone. I had two flat tires when I rode in the forest. I don’t know how to fix a tire and he doesn’t ride well. Give me a horse.”
Hoss resolved himself to never come home with a bike ever again when his brothers were there too.
